Printer and Scanner Requirements
Printers
- EXACT is compatible with all printers that work as expected within Windows, therefore we do not recommend any specific manufacturer or model.
- The dental practice and their IT company are responsible for ensuring that the latest drivers are installed for the printer/s.
- Printer drivers need to be installed on all workstations that will need to print.
- If all printers are already configured to work within Windows, the printing setup will take less time during the EXACT installation.
- Generally, it is not required that the network printer is 'mapped' to a local LPT port and it is not recommended.
- The printer spooling type should be set to RAW.
- If the same printer is to be used for both A4 and A5 printing, multiple printers will need to be configured, one for A4 and one for A5. The printers should be shared and clearly labelled so as to easily identify them, e.g. HP_A4 and HP_A5.
- Non-standard paper sizes are likely to require custom EXACT layouts (PRX) to be created (i.e Zebra/Star printers used for appointment cards and/or receipts)
Recommended card printers & settings
Zebra (ZDesigner) & Dymo are the most commonly used and compatible printers for printing labels/cards (inc Appointment cards/Receipts) as EXACT has pre-built layouts ready to print onto these types of card dimensions. EXACT will also work with Star printers although additional printing/layout changes may be required.
From our experience, we have seen that card printers require the following settings (may apply mostly to Zebra printers: Zebra ZDesigner Printer Setup).
Paper settings: | Landscape |
Paper size: | Label 2.25 - 3.00 |
Copy count: | 1 |
Graphic resolution: | 200 DPI |
Media: | 3.5 ips |
Paper output: | Cutter disabled (not for all models) |
Print density: | 11 |
Metallic spooling: | ON |

Scanners
EXACT utilises an internal Scanning Acquisition Application to connect to installed scanner drivers - this can be launched separately to EXACT, however, it will not provide any patient or EXACT-related content.
Due to the Scanner Acquisition Application or Scanning App, all scanners should be compatible with EXACT.
