Gender Neutrality
Exploring the subject of gender neutrality with patients can be tricky to navigate, more so in the medical environment. An important point to remember is that sex and gender are two different things.
💡Tip: Explore NHS guidance on Sex, gender and sexuality.
Gender Neutrality in EXACT
There are two areas in EXACT to identify a patient's gender preference: Sex and Title.
Patient Sex
The sex of a patient is often referred to as 'the sex someone was registered with at birth'.
On the patient record, there are three options for recording the sex of a patient;
- Female, Male and Other
💡Tip: To add Other as the patient sex, you must manually type this into the Sex field, however, this option is available for selection when completing patient demographics on Patient Portal.
⚠️Please Note: You cannot TC an NHS course of treatment with the patient sex recorded as Other, this must be either Male or Female.
Patient Title
The option to select Mx (Mixter) is available in the patient Title dropdown option. This is commonly used by non-binary, or people or those who do not identify with the gender binary.
