Graphical (3D) Tooth Charting
The default graphical tooth chart is displayed in 2D, however, 3D tooth charting is available, if you would prefer to view your tooth charting in 3D.
The 3D tooth chart has a higher use of your computer graphics cards. Therefore, if you notice a decrease in computer performance, it is recommended you disable 3D tooth charting until you have discussed graphics cards with your hardware supplier.
Understanding the 3D Tooth Chart
The 3D model can be displayed without any treatment and includes features such as jaw mode, chart mode, bone density, gum levels, pulp chambers, teeth and jaw rotation and a copy function.
Chart and Jaw Modes in 3D
The 3D tooth chart has two modes, chart and jaw.
Chart mode
This is the default display when you first open 3D charting.
Jaw mode
This option is available by clicking on the jaw button alongside the tooth chart.
The charts show all teeth that are charted as being present, along with completed treatment. Any planned treatment is displayed in blue.
Graphical Movement in 3D Modes
Graphics in the 3D charts can be rotated in any direction when charting to provide a real-life view of the patient's dental structure.
The following 3D movement modes are available;
- Jaw movement in 3D chart mode (rotate upper and/or lower jaw representations).
- Tooth movement in 3D chart mode (move or rotate teeth representations).
- Jaw movement in 3D jaw mode (rotate upper and/or lower jaw representations).
- Tooth movement in 3D jaw mode (move or rotate teeth representations).
Movement in both the chart and jaw modes is accomplished via on-screen menus and option buttons, and by using the left and right mouse buttons, which have different functions as indicated in the instructions.
You can practice using the graphical movement controls as much as you like, then click the reset button to restore the graphical display to its default mode.
Jaw Movement in 3D Chart Mode
You have two buttons to rotate the upper and lower jaws.
- Click on the rotate upper or rotate lower buttons.
- Click anywhere on the upper/lower teeth and hold your left mouse button down.
- Move the mouse up and/or down to rotate the jaw.
- If required, you can save the rotated jaw position by clicking the save changes button, otherwise, you can return the jaw to its original position by clicking the reset all button.
Tooth Movement in 3D Chart Mode
Move the tooth button
- Click on the move tooth button.
- Click on the required tooth and hold the left or right mouse button down.
- Move the mouse in the required direction and the tooth will move accordingly.
- You will notice that a yellow box appears around the currently selected tooth.
- If you are not in tooth mode, this box will appear in grey.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Rotate the tooth button
- Click on the rotate tooth button.
- Click on the required tooth and hold down the left mouse button to tip the tooth or the right mouse button to rotate the tooth.
- Move the mouse in the required direction and the tooth will move accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.

Jaw Movement in 3D Jaw Mode
To activate the jaw mode, click on the jaw button under the view section.
Moving the Jaws
- Click on the move jaw button.
- Click anywhere on the 3D chart and hold your left or right mouse button down depending on how you want to move the jaw.
- Move the mouse and the jaws will move accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Rotating the Jaws
- Click on the rotate jaw button.
- Click anywhere on the 3D chart and hold your left or right mouse button down depending on how you want to rotate the jaw.
- Move the mouse and the jaws will rotate accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Opening the Jaws
- Click on the open jaw button.
- Click anywhere on the 3D chart and hold your left mouse button down to open the lower jaw or the right mouse button down to open the upper jaw.
- Move the mouse and the jaw will open accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Tooth Movement in 3D Jaw Mode
Moving a Tooth
- Click on the move tooth button.
- Click anywhere on the 3D chart and hold your left or right mouse button down depending on how you want to move the tooth.
- Move the mouse and the tooth will move accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Rotating a Tooth
- Click on the rotate tooth button.
- Click anywhere on the 3D chart and hold your left or right mouse button down depending on how you want to rotate the tooth.
- Move the mouse and the tooth will rotate accordingly.
- Release the mouse button when you have reached the required position.
Utilies Menu
The utilites options include;
- Select allows you to select an area, clicking this button and then dragging your mouse cursor allowing you to copy to your clipboard, external or save the image. You can then use the image in an external software such as Microsoft Word.
- To retrieve the image from your clipboard, open the program you want to insert the image into (for example, Presentation Manager, Microsoft Word or Microsoft Paint) and press CTRL+V to insert the contents of your clipboard.
- Reset all resets the tooth chart to its original state.
- Save Changes saves the positions of the teeth as they are currently displayed.
Depending on the treatment present, you can also hide treatment, when used this will change the option to show treatment, which will display the patient’s treatment when clicked.
Gum and Bone Models
The 3D chart features the ability to display gum and/or bone when viewing the teeth in jaw mode. You can control the opacity of each.
Activating Gum and Bone Models
- Open the 3D tooth chart.
- Select jaw mode.
- Under the show/hide menu, click show gum or show bone as required.
- Click and drag the slider to set the opacity.
- Click and drag the slider to set the opacity level that best displays the image you require.
- You have controls available to show the root canals of all or selected teeth.
The tooth button provides you with a scroll bar which you can use to manipulate the visibility of the root canal of a selected tooth. The all teeth option provides you access to a scroll bar to manipulate the chart to show the root canals for all teeth. - To save any changes you have made, click save changes, then save the patient's record.
- To return the 3D display to how it was, click the reset all button.
Tips and Tricks

Right-clicking on the 3D chart will reveal an options menu with all of the options outlined above including an additional feature to choose the background colour for the 3D tooth chart. You can also save all changes or just changes made on the highlighted tooth.
